Customized Town Grower Kits

At the height of Covid-19 restrictions, many Singaporeans were spending more time at home than ever, which started an urban farming movement among aspiring urban farmers. After visiting our urban aeroponics farm at City Sprouts, Henderson Road; one of the visitors reached out to us to understand more about our aeroponic systems and how our systems worked. Since Aeroponic cultivation methods are relatively new in Singapore, not many Singaporeans are familiar with the theory of aeroponics or how it differs from traditional farming methods.

Key Requirements

After speaking with this client, we began to understand his requirements for cultivating leafy vegetables in his home. These were his requirements: 

1) Must not require large space

2) Must not require any renovation or alterations to existing land

3) Must not require much maintenance

4) Must not require constant care and attention (i.e. must be able to operate autonomously)

5) Must be able to grow vegetables without the use of pesticides

Contextualization of our technology

Since our Aeroponic Systems were designed for commercial use, we went through another round of research and development to make our systems more user friendly, more portable, and more compact. By reducing the size of our system and also altering the configuration of the system, we were able to design a smaller aeroponic system to meet the requirements of our client. With added features such as automatic water dosage, we designed a lightweight system which is 100% infependent of human intervention (which allowed our client to go on holidays without worrying about his vegetables at home).

Growing his own vegetables

Within 2 weeks of installation and commissioning, our client began harvesting and consuming his home grown asian vegetables (such as kailan, chye sim etc) on a daily basis. Due to the proximity of the system, he is able to consume the vegetables harvested within 1 hour. which has given a new perspective of how “Fresh” vegetables really taste. On days which he is overseas on business, he can leave the vegetables in the system to continue to grow, not having to worry about expiration dates anymore!
